Campaign idea
Appreciation gifts that read as considered
The failure mode here is not spending too little, it is sending the same branded item you hand out at a booth. Fewer items, better ones, and a lighter touch on the logo.
- Where to start
- One or two items, chosen on quality not reach
- What to change
- Restrain the branding; a gift is not a billboard
- What MerchMaker adds
- Seeing the restrained mark on the product before ordering
When it works
A gift is judged against other gifts, not other merch
The recipient is not comparing this to last year's conference tote. They are comparing it to the bottle of wine and the hamper, which means perceived quality carries the whole gesture and a visible logo can actively work against it.
- Thank-yous after a major project or a renewal
- Holiday and quarter-end programs
- Tiered client lists, where a standard and a premium version help
What to include
Premium utility over novelty, every time
Something the recipient would plausibly have bought is the target. That usually means drinkware with a good finish, a well-made bag, or a genuinely nice notebook — and it means resisting the item that is interesting rather than useful.
- Favour a good version of an ordinary object
- Packaging or a coordinated pair raises the perceived care
- Avoid anything that only works as a surprise
How to present it
Show the restraint, because it is the choice
A small engraved mark and a large printed one are different gifts, and the difference is impossible to convey in a spec line. Rendering the mark on the supplier's own product photograph lets the buyer see the restraint they are paying for, with a person accepting the render before it is shown.
- Show the mark at the size and method you are actually recommending
- Present a standard and a premium tier if the client list is segmented
- Keep the collection short; two good options beat six
Questions
How visible should the logo be on a gift?
Less visible than on a giveaway. A small engraved or tonal mark usually lands better, which is worth showing the buyer rather than describing.
How many items should the gift be?
One or two. The budget is better spent on quality than on count, and a pair reads as considered where four reads as a hamper of merch.
Do minimums get in the way of small gift lists?
They can, and that is exactly why MerchMaker shows the supplier's minimum and refuses an under-minimum cart line before payment rather than after.
